School of Divinity (University of Edinburgh) RAE Results (18 December 2008)
The School of Divinity once again turned in a very strong performance in the national research-ratings of university departments in the 2008 Research Assessment Exercise results released 18 December. With 60% of our research activity rated in the two highest categories (4* and 3*), and 30% in the 4* category (which means "world-leading in terms of originality, significance, and rigour"), we are very pleased. Indeed, the School has the highest percentage in the 4* category of any Scottish university in Theology & Religious Studies, and stands a joint-third in the UK in the percentage of very top-rated (4*) research activity (with Oxford and University College London). The School submitted 100% of its academic staff (whereas in some other universities a selection of staff was submitted), who comprise the largest number of research-active staff of any unit in the subject in Scotland, and the third-largest in the UK. On the RAE assessment of publications submitted, research grants awarded, the numbers of postgraduate students, and indications of professional esteem for members of academic staff, 85% of our research activity was judged of internationally recognised quality.
